Drawing Workshops

First we looked at line and form, making quick simple line drawings of our objects and extracting shape from them and creating a 2D stencil. I found it difficult to draw on the spot, but this is something I need to get used to. I then did three drawings; tonal, line and colour. It was interesting that by the end of the session I could whip out three drawings that I was quite happy with, and not be tempted to re-draw and re-draw. I then made a collage with photocopied, playing with scale and shape. I think this could be worked into more, I would like it to be busier with more dark lines and possibly more colour.

In the next session, we extracted colour from one object, looking closely at tone and mark-making. This process forces you to notice the exact tones. We also did a bit of collage, which I found harder to make work as you have less control, but then mixing collage with drawing went well for me, the clash of shape and lines is fun to play around with. I am not satisfied with my colours for translating into sample, so I will have another go. I did however learn a lot from this process, it has made me look at drawing in a completely different way.

Box Clever

My collection is a series of different containers. They are all objects made to store something, they were not produced to be beautiful or even to be kept. Glass bottles dug up from my parent’s garden, old tubes of paint, tins, and cosmetic bottles. I think this idea of something practical being repurposed as decorative is very interesting. By keeping these objects after using their contents, we are giving them a second life.

Rough Guide

I loved the rough guide project- It was a great way to discover a new part of the city, do some observational drawing and collaborate with others. I was sceptical about sketching in public, because I generally need more time and space to do some decent drawing, but did well when I managed to shake the idea of my work being perfect. Brixton was a brilliant area to have, there’s so much hustle and bustle and something different with each corner you turn; the market, Brixton village and beautiful old architecture. I was happy with my sketches of the market, I think the quick rough lines and uneven tones captured the quirky chaos around me. For the final book I selected a line drawing of some fruit and veg, which I then edited with coloured paper, putting pattern on top and paint. It was a lot harder than I thought to do 110 copies and make them all different, but the quick pace forced me to be less precious about each piece.
